Defensive Handgun 1 (One Day 6-8 hours)
Our Defensive Handgun 1 course is designed for anyone from the first-time shooter; the weekend shooter or the seasoned operator that wants some core fundamental skills building with the use of a pistol for tactical or defensive purposes. Our professional staff will help you to become comfortable with the core fundamental skills of sight alignment, grip, stance trigger squeeze, the use of a holster, and fixing malfunctions. We will introduce you to modern handgun fighting techniques, proper target acquisition and shot placement to effectively win an armed encounter. You will take home effective drills and techniques that you can use in your own training regime. If you are a new handgun owner or recreational shooter looking to get into the tactical training world this is a great course to start with without a large monetary commitment. It is also a good way for an experienced operator to build and hone their skills. We look forward to seeing you in this fun and informative course. (MINIMUM ROUND COUNT – 300 rounds)
Equipment list:
- A properly functioning handgun
- A proper fitting holster for that handgun
- At least 3 magazines for that handgun (5 recommended if using single stacked mags)
- 300-500 rounds of ammunition for that handgun
- Magazine Pouches for the magazines
- Body armor if you would wear it while deploying a pistol
- Sharpie type pen for marking targets
- Pen and notepad for taking notes
- Hat or other head covering
- Gloves (recommended but not mandatory)
- Knee and elbow pads (recommended but not mandatory)
- Eye and ear protection
- Footwear that you can stand in all day (boots are highly recommended)
- A lunch or snack food (We will not have time to leave the range for lunch)
About the instructor Todd Nielsen
Director of Training
Todd retired as a full time police officer in August 2015. He started his law enforcement career in 1990 with the San Jose Police Department. During his tenure, Todd has served in many Special Operations units which consisted of a convert and plain clothed Narcotic Enforcement, Critical Incident Teams, Rapid Containment Teams, Crowd Control and also doing High-Risk Warrant Service with his department and in conjunction with other local SWAT teams. He has been a Field Training Officer (FTO) for over 10 years and AR-15 Operator (Specialist) for over 17 years. This has given him an opportunity to train many new and veteran officers. This has also allowed him to be a team leader most of his career. Todd has served as part of the Secret Service Dignitary Protection Operations for Presidents Clinton and Bush. As part of being a full time instructor for his department, Todd developed and implemented a low-light tactical training program for his department along with training all in-service officers in Active Shooter Tactics, Use of Force, Dynamic and Slow Search Tactics, First Aid and CPR. Todd has worked as a Lead Instructor for a large domestic tactical training firm and has trained law enforcement officers from across the country, military contractors, as well as military personnel with the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) on numerous occasions prior to their deployments overseas. He has also been awarded an Outstanding Police Duty Award, for his actions in June 2011 for hearing the sounds of gunfire, setting up a rapid response team, and arresting the still armed shooter within minutes of him doing the shooting.
Todd is a POST certified firearms instructor, a NRA firearms instructor as well as a certified force on force instructor and a certified AR-15 armorer. He has successfully completed many patrol, advanced, tactical and instructor level firearms training courses as well as CPR and Defensive Medicine (TCCC) certifications. He has been a tactical and firearms consultant and actor for video and commercial projects. He has also trained with many of the top instructors in the private firearms industry in addition to some of the leading military instructors in the world today.
Along with firearms and shooting, Todd’s hobbies include scuba diving where he was awarded the William Poelle Life Saving Medal for pulling a drowning diver out of the heavy surf and performing CPR on her and saving her life in 2005. He is a Merit Badge Counselor and Assistant Leader with the Boy Scout Troops in his area. He is a member of the National Tactical Officers Association (NTOA) and a proud Life Member of the NRA. He is also a proud supporter of Operation Care and Comfort, the Seal-Naval Special Warfare Foundation, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund and the COPS foundation.
No refunds will be issued on cancellations within 48 hrs of the course date. You may only reschedule one time for another course at a later date for no charge. Each additional time you reschedule you will be charged a $25 fee to reschedule.
